SONIC WALKIE: A series of dislocalised soundscape compositions by Andrea Pazos & Edu Comelles

(( What ))

Sonic Walkie is a project in distance, a project that aims to build bridges between cities and people. Through a process of collaboration Andrea and Edu are trying to build sonic portraits of two cities juxtaposed, sonifying the semantic net we have in life.No matter how, where and when a bell sounds, it´s still a bell and it still refers to a church and a lot more from there. The proposal is a game of distances and complicities in which common sonic environments meet in a space in between that shortens the line that separates two locations and people.  Sonic Walkie is about the poetics of distance, the sound similarities and differences between territories and the space between people. Sonic Walkie is an outstretched hand through remoteness between people.

(( How ))

The proposal aims to create aural dialogues between two cities Manchester (UK) and Valencia (Spain). Through a language game based on sound the project attempts to build soundscape compositions understand as exquisite corpses. Andrea in Manchester records the soundscape of a square and in Valencia, Edu does the same. After that, the two soundscapes are mixed up and extremely paned. One soundscape stays on the right channel and the other one stays on the left channel. So the result is a composition that tries to create a mirrored situation in which the sonic peculiarities of each city are confronted and analysed.
The idea for this project came up discussing about sound spacialization. Due to Andrea´s hearing impairment, she cannot appreciate a stereo recording. Everything is monochannel for her. So this project is an approach and a result-answer of the wonders how the hearing system works, perception; moreover, what we imagine how the other listen Every month we will record soundscapes from our cities according to a predetermined theme or topic and we will upload the sonic corpses building a sonic dialogue, a distance project that is going to build bridges through landscape and territory. So the user can choose in listening each soundscape, or listen the whole sum of tracks as an exquisite-corpse.
